This week Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o and Kathleen Kennedy kicked off the tour in Mexico City, celebrating with a fan event and Q&A. While an amazing opportunity for a fan base that has grown exponentially since for several decades two questions remain at the forefront. First and foremost, will the movie deliver and truly meet and exceed expectations? And nearly as relevant, does it even matter?
It has become generally accepted that the special effects will be mind blowing but what about the story? This is a unique period in motion picture history and for Pop Culture overall as for real success to be engendered the entire experience will need to do what few films with multiple sequels have achieved. It will need to galvanize a multi-generational audience who have all been removed from a new installment of this big screen phenomenon for a very long period of time.
To that conundrum one must also acknowledge the reality of brand and the billions generated not only by ticket sales but from related merchandise. In the end perhaps it is enough that at a time when the world on this planet is feeling more than just a little chaotic, somewhere, in a galaxy far, far away the universe is being defended by a group of men and women who have put age, gender, DNA and who knows what else aside to stand up and be heard while defending what is right and what is just.
NOTE:
Whatever the outcome the cast has made a refreshing commitment to connecting with fans world wide as seen in recent visits to both Mexico City and Seoul.
